When work in Blue Yonder (formerly JDA) WMS isn't reaching operators on the floor, the task usually exists somewhere in the system — the question is what's stopping it from being released or assigned. Here's the diagnostic order a senior consultant follows to find the block quickly.
1. Confirm the work actually exists
First separate a creation problem from a release problem. Check whether the tasks were generated at all for the wave or order in question. If no work exists, the issue is upstream — in wave planning, allocation, or order status — not in task release. If the work exists but isn't reaching operators, continue below.
2. Check wave and task status
Work has to be in a released, assignable status to reach the floor. Verify the wave completed its processing and released, and that the tasks aren't held, short, or in an exception status. A wave that stalled mid-release, or tasks sitting in a held state, will never appear on a device.
3. Review task assignment and labour configuration
Blue Yonder decides which operator gets which task based on labour and assignment rules. Walk these:
- Operator eligibility: is the operator assigned to the right zone, equipment, and work type? A mismatch means the system has work but no eligible person to give it to.
- Task selection / interleaving rules: if the rules don't resolve to the waiting work, it sits unassigned even though it's released.
- Equipment constraints: work requiring a piece of equipment no signed-on operator has won't be dispatched.
4. Check location and inventory eligibility
Tasks depend on valid source and destination locations. If a pick location is blocked, empty, or in a status that excludes it — or a destination is full or ineligible — the task can't be dispatched. Confirm the locations involved are available and in a workable state.
5. Look for holds and blocks
Holds at the order, inventory, or location level quietly prevent work from releasing. Check the chain for any active holds that would stop the task from being assignable.
6. Use the logs and work views to find the real reason
Blue Yonder's work and wave views, together with the system logs, show the status of each task and usually why it isn't dispatching — an eligibility gap, a blocked location, or a wave that didn't fully release. Group the stuck work by what it has in common and the cause usually becomes clear.
The faster way
Work-release problems are exactly the kind of multi-layer diagnosis SupplyChain Assist is built for — describe the symptom and where work is stuck, and it walks the likely causes with the specific checks for your configuration, instead of you working through wave, labour, and location settings alone.
